Have Your Own Social Network Site
Since their introduction, social network sites (SNSs) such as MySpace, Facebook, Cyworld, and Bebo have attracted millions of users, many of whom have integrated these sites into their daily practices. As of this writing, there are hundreds of SNSs, with various technological affordances, supporting a wide range of interests and practices. While their key technological features are fairly consistent,
The cultures that emerge around SNSs are varied. Most sites support the maintenance of pre-existing social networks, but others help strangers connect based on shared interests, political views, or activities.
Some sites cater to diverse audiences, while others attract people based on common language or shared racial, sexual, religious, or nationality-based identities. Sites also vary in the extent to which they incorporate new information and communication tools, such as mobile connectivity, blogging, and photo/video-sharing.
Social-networking sites have some natural advantages for advertisers, too. Even if the environment can be a bit wild, it creates an opportunity to develop powerful affinity groups and to collect a mother lode of demographic data about its members.
That can be used to create carefully targeted promotions that go way beyond the common text and display ads found on the Web. “It’s a challenging environment to get your message across, because there is a lot going on, like in a teenager’s bedroom,” says Organic’s Young. “But there’s an upside, because people reveal a lot about themselves when they use social-networking sites. That can allow you to target messages in pretty sophisticated ways.”
An oportunity has now arisen for the man or woman on the street to create there own social network site and cash in on this exceptional craze that is sweeping the internet.
